The Design Proposal
Responding to our client’s brief, we created a larger, more flexible living space on the ground floor, with an open-plan kitchen, dining and reception area, and a new ground-floor WC.The reconfigured layout enhances natural light, improves circulation and strengthens the connection between the interior and the rear garden, resulting in a bright, modern family home in North London. more
At the heart of the project is a bespoke staircase with Douglas fir treads and refined stone detailing. By repositioning the stair, we created a generous double-height entrance space, creating a dramatic sense of arrival and a strong visual link between the ground and first and second floors.
Loft Study
Additional accommodation has been created in the existing loft, where a quiet study provides a dedicated workspace away from the main living areas. New Velux rooflights set into the existing roof slope bring natural light into this room. Across the house, floor levels were carefully adjusted to achieve comfortable ceiling heights on all levels, while maintaining the original roofline and respecting the rhythm of the terrace.Material Palette
A continuous material palette of lime plaster, marble, timber and brick unifies the interior spaces. Natural, tactile finishes bring warmth and texture to the rooms. Stone details bring unexpected richness to stair landings and bathrooms.Conservation Area Context
Located within the Canonbury Conservation Area, on the southern side of St Paul’s Road, the property forms part of a terrace of nine post-war rebuilt 1950s houses. The design responds sensitively to this conservation area, preserving the character of the street while delivering a high-quality contemporary refurbishment and extension.The design was delivered in collaboration with Hamish Vincent Design, who were also responsible for the FF&E.
