Architecture for London is an award‑winning conservation and heritage architects practice specialising in sensitive refurbishments and extensions of listed buildings and historic homes across London. As an RIBA chartered practice, we help private homeowners upgrade and reconfigure historic houses while preserving the qualities that make them special.

Our work balances sensitive restoration with new interventions that feel calm, minimal and carefully detailed. We work with Grade II, Grade II* and Grade I listed homes across London.

We have specialist knowledge of heritage construction, including: stone and brick repair, traditional joinery, sash windows, and traditional lime plaster finishes.

Our focus is on improving layout, natural light and energy performance while retaining or reinstating original features. We work closely with local authorities, heritage consultants and specialist craftspeople.

Our residential architects have a track record of negotiating and achieving listed building consents for complex and contentious schemes, including the substantial refurbishment of a Grade I listed building in a conservation area on the Grosvenor Estate in Westminster.

While we specialise in residential projects, our architects also have significant experience with heritage commercial, retail and public buildings. Previous projects in London include embassies, Victorian warehouse buildings, libraries and feasibility studies for churches.

Conservation Architects

We are experienced in securing planning and listed building consent in sensitive locations, including conservation areas in Camden, Islington, Southwark, Greenwich, Westminster, RBKC and Richmond. We also work in the Hampstead Garden Suburb and The Dulwich Estate. Our conservation architects in London prepare heritage statements, design and access statements and detailed technical drawings of proposals to support our applications.

For particularly contentious schemes, we work with trusted heritage and planning consultants to advise our clients during the planning and listed building consent process.

Sustainability

Many of our heritage projects involve improving the thermal performance of heritage properties, including those that are listed. We develop low‑energy strategies tailored to heritage buildings, specifying wood fibre or aerogel internal wall insulation to maintain breathability and minimise any visual impact on original decorative plaster and joinery.

We improve airtightness with lime plaster and can assist in the selection of conservation-approved vacuum slim glazing or secondary glazing. This approach protects the building’s historic character while reducing energy use and improving comfort.
