Westminster house extension architect: 3D perspective sketch

Outline design is now complete for our Westminster house extension and refurbishment project at Albion Street, west London

The existing Georgian town house was built in 1840. It is Grade II listed and located near to Hyde Park, within the Bayswater conservation area of Westminster.

A non-original three storey rear extension and conservatory is to be demolished and replaced with a contemporary proposal. This extends into the side return to accommodate a large, high specification Bulthaup kitchen and additional living and guest accommodation below.

A media and entertainment room is created in the original front room at lower ground floor, featuring bespoke timber panelling and joinery to conceal the media components.

Where original windows have been lost in the existing house, these will be replaced with double glazed sash units to match original items.

The top floor of the extension replaces the poorly detailed conservatory, providing a glazed reading room with an adjacent terrace. The heritage constraints required that the new storey will feature white painted timber framed glazing to match existing. Architecture for London worked closely with a heritage consultant and the conservation team at Westminster to negotiate key contentious alterations to the building.

The new construction refers to the materiality and proportions of the original building. A double height window to the rear draws from the proportions and fine glazing bars of the sash windows to the existing house, while new facades are in a gauged brick which is also present in original lintels. Balustrades, planters and facade details are in bronze. The small garden is newly landscaped with a low-maintenance garden design in natural stone.
