The property is a second-floor flat within a large mansion block on Whitehead Grove, in a conservation area of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
Our Design Approach
The flat is reconfigured to create an open-plan arrangement between the kitchen and living room. A bifold screen allows the two spaces to be separated when required, offering flexibility between open and enclosed layouts.
The new bespoke kitchen is designed to match the joinery used throughout the flat. Bathrooms will be fully refurbished and the existing WC relocated. Additional alterations include the installation of a gas fire with new stone surrounds.
South Kensington architects: sketch plansThe refurbishment focuses on improving natural light and views across the communal gardens, with carefully considered internal Crittal glazing partitions that allow daylight deeper into the plan. Subtle changes to the internal layout improve circulation and create more flexible living spaces, better suited to contemporary life.
Material choices are guided by a minimal, understated palette, combining painted joinery, oiled oak timber flooring and stone surfaces to create a cohesive interior. Built-in storage is integrated throughout to reduce visual clutter and enhance the clean lines.

The proposals also seek to improve the flat’s thermal and acoustic performance where possible, important considerations in any high-quality residential refurbishment. Insulation upgrades, improved airtightness and better glazing are explored to deliver a comfortable residential environment with reduced energy use.
Acoustic performance is considered between neighbouring properties, supporting quieter residential living in a dense urban setting.
As the flat lies in a conservation area, a planning application will be required for the proposed external window changes. Our experience with residential projects in conservation areas and listed buildings in Kensington and Chelsea helps to ensure that proposals are sensitive to their historic context while still delivering contemporary comfort.
