Extension and refurbishment at Brewster Gardens, North Kensington
Our house extension and refurbishment at Brewster Gardens, North Kensington (W10) is now complete. This residential project transforms a traditional brick terrace into a light-filled contemporary home, with a carefully detailed rear and side-return extension that connects the living spaces to the brick patio and the garden beyond.
Project description:
The design features a rear and side-return house extension with bespoke oak-framed sliding doors and a large frameless picture window overlooking the garden. Externally, the earthy tones of the brick pavers and pre-cast concrete coping details are selected to complement the existing brickwork and give the new facades a calm, cohesive character.
Inside, new oak flooring and stone tiles run throughout the ground floor, visually linking the kitchen, dining, and living areas. The kitchen and bespoke joinery are finished in a white satin lacquer, creating a bright, minimal backdrop to the warm timber and brick. The project was selected for inclusion in the Open House London 2015.

North Kensington Brick House Extension
This new brick house extension in North Kensington creates a generous open-plan kitchen / diner room with fantastic garden views. Full-height oak-framed sliding doors allow the living space to open up in summer, while the large frameless glass window frames views of the planting and brings daylight into the cooking areas.
Brickwork detailing is a key part of the design. Careful modulation of brick bonds, reveals and coping stones gives the extension a crafted, tactile quality while remaining sympathetic to the character of the existing terrace.
Frameless Glass and Brick Detailing
A key feature of this residential project is the frameless garden window, set within the new brick facade. The junction between frameless glass and brick is carefully detailed to minimise visible structure and create a seamless picture window to the garden. This detail enhances both the interior experience and the external elevations, adding a contemporary layer to the traditional North Kensington streetscape.

Design Visualisations and Built Project
Early design visualisations explored the relationship between the new brick extension, the garden, and the existing house. These studies informed the final position of openings, the depth of reveals, and the balance between solid wall and glazing.
The completed project closely follows these visualisations, demonstrating a clear design intent from concept through to construction. The result is a calm, robust family space that enhances everyday living, with carefully chosen materials that will weather well over time.
