Belsize Park house extension

Architecture for London has completed an initial design session for a Belsize Park house extension.

The project is a house extension and internal refurbishment in Belsize Park. The existing property is a terraced Georgian home on Belsize Grove, in the Borough of Camden.

The property is Grade 2 listed and is part of a symmetrical terrace of seven houses built in 1825. The house is finished in stucco with a slate mansard roof. It has two principal storeys, plus mansard and lower ground floor levels. The extension will provide more space to the rear of the house at lower ground floor. It will also improve the route to an existing garden room, which is used as a gym and home office.

The house lies within the Belsize conservation area, which is notable for largely mid 19th century speculative development on a grand scale. Terraces and Italianate villas in the area have ornate classical details including grand porticos and ornate balustraded boundary walls and railings.

The houses were built with large gardens and servant spaces in the basements and attics, being aimed at wealthy professionals. At the turn of the 20th Century, the declining demand for large houses is illustrated by the smaller terraced houses in roads such as Englands Lane.

In the 21st Century many of these villas and terraced homes are being extended to increase family living space on the ground or lower ground floors. Rear extensions often create new spaces filled with natural light and have a better connection to the garden.
