Barnsbury listed house extension - architecture for london

Planning and listed building applications have been submitted for our Barnsbury listed house extension. This project is for an extension to a Georgian house in Gibson Square in Islington.

The existing terraced house is Grade II listed and located within the Barnsbury Conservation Area. Gibson square is formed of largely identical early 19th Century flat fronted town houses, with a small public garden to the centre.

The design proposal includes remodelling the interior spaces and creating a lower ground floor reading room lined in terrazzo. The extension is separated by a frameless glass skylight that wraps around the new box forming a distinction between the existing brickwork and new form. The new brick bond features angled projecting bricks to create interesting shadow and texture. This pattern continues through to the planters, which step up to the garden wall.

At ground floor, the roof of the new extension forms an outdoor terrace that links back with the dining room and overlooks the mature garden to the rear of the site.

The existing building benefits from having no outrigger extensions unlike the rest of the houses in the terrace. As a result, the rear wall is fully exposed and the new extension is designed to sit carefully against this facade, whilst fitting within the various stepped levels of the garden.
