This project is a housing development in Surbiton, south west London, within the borough of Kingston upon Thames. The proposal creates nine units, including flats and mews style houses.
The narrow urban site informed the mews style design approach, with houses accessed via a new stone surfaced street. The project achieves a similar density to an equivalent block of flats while providing each unit with its own ground floor private entrance. Three of the houses are raised to provide parking at ground level and each is accessed via its own private stair. All units incorporate balconies, patios or roof gardens which exceed London Plan standards, while supporting new opportunities for wildlife.
Handmade Danish brick finishes to the elevations reflect the surrounding Victorian context, yet the elongated brick format contrasts with typical brick dimensions.
