JuuL House by NKS Architects
This house in Fukuoka, Japan was created for a musician who required a home that could also function as a small music hall. The architect’s response was to design carefully crafted interior spaces featuring convex curved ceilings that diffuse sound. Exposed boardmarked concrete is used for ceilings and walls throughout, and geometric patterns are created with acoustic absorbant material inserted into openings in the walls. The distinctive curved ceiling features full length skylights that allow soft light into the space and create patterns of light and shade on the walls. This unusual brief has created an unique domestic space that succeeds in functioning both as a beautiful home and a small cultural facility.
